David
Carey
A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, David studied Speech and
Drama at the RSAMD, has a BA from Edinburgh University, and gained
his MA (with distinction) in Contemporary English Language and
Linguistics at Reading University.
During the 1980s David worked with Cicely Berry as assistant Voice
Director for the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford and London.
In 1987 he became Senior Lecturer in Voice Studies at the Central
School of Speech and Drama (promoted in 2000 to Principal Lecturer),
and for 17 years was Course Leader for the School’s postgraduate
Voice Studies course. In 2000 David instigated the creation of the
International Centre for Voice, to serve the professional
development of teachers of voice and speech. He is currently Voice
Tutor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
He has given workshops
in Voice and Text at the Shakespeare Festivals of Oregon and
Illinois, and at the Stratford Festival Theatre in Canada, and was
tutor on the Royal National Theatres Intensive Voice courses for
several years. A member of several committees including CSSDs
Academic Board and Research Committee, David was appointed Associate
Editor for Voice and Speech Review, the journal of the Voice and
Speech Trainers Association in America, in 2002.
David released a
workbook - The Vocal Arts Workbook and DVD - with his wife Rebecca
Clark Carey.
