Module Two - Unit Eight (Option-Two)
Clinica Voice Work
with Julie McClean

 Julie McClean

Overview
Speech and Language Therapists will benefit from day one of Studio Voice Work that covers training targets in professional voice users. This second option focuses on the practical application of work learned in a Speech and Language Therapy context and will enable you to use visual and auditory analysis skills in profiling a client’s needs and to use appropriate strategies for dealing with them.

Learning Outcomes
On completing this unit you will be able to:

1 Apply strategies to help remediate muscle tension dysphonia.
2 Enable patients to clearly understand ‘what is going on’ and to gain control over their own voice use.
3 Identify and facilitate change of a particular vocal set and/or onset which is inefficient for the patient’s needs and potentially or actually unhealthy.
4 Enable the client to learn a particular vocal set to be used as a compensatory or alternative strategy in specific circumstances.

Unit Assignments

1 An analysis of recorded material, spoken or sung, in terms of vocal function and voice quality. The analysis may be prepared as a marked script or commentary on the material. You may use profiling methods such as Vocal Profile analysis, the Grabas Scale and Buffalo Voice Profile along with terminology and criteria identified during the course of the programme.
2 You will be required to present case histories of four different clients studied over a period of one to six sessions. The case histories must be presented in written form, though you may use audio or video examples in support of your written analysis. Supervision from Gillyanne Kayes and Julie McLean will be available during this unit either by telephone or e-mail.

Unit Assessment
You will be assessed on your ability to identify goals with your clients and set a suitable programme of work. In addition you will need to:

1 Demonstrate your ability to make a clear and accurate assessment of client’s vocal needs relevant to the remit of the Integrated Voice™ Programme and to monitor client progress during the observation period.
2 Show that you can help clients understand what is going on with their voice by use of accurate modelling, clarity of explanation and effectiveness of communication.
3 Demonstrate your ability to facilitate change in client voice patterns appropriate to their situation.
Other Information Clinical Voice work is only open to qualified Speech and Language Therapists registered on the Integrated Voice™ programme..
