Module Two - Unit Eight (Option-One)
Studio Voice Work
with Gillyanne Kayes, Jeremy Fisher and course consultant Elizabeth Stirling

Overview
This unit focuses on the development of diagnostic ability and use of auditory, visual and language skills for clarity of communication. Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher will be joined by Elisabeth Stirling on the follow-up day. Elisabeth Stirling is a certified NLP™ Master Practitioner, who will offer advice and feedback on effective use of language in studio voice work.

The unit comprises
Diagnostic and performance tools; analytic skills; building a voice profile for students and clients; understanding performance and teaching/ practice in perspective; discovering the relationship between vocal range and different categories of voice; raising awareness in students/clients; setting appropriate learning goals; developing an effective teaching dynamic..

Learning Outcomes
From this unit you will

  1 Acquire the knowledge to develop a healthy and effective teaching dynamic with your clients.
  2 Have a basis for developing and exploring language for discussion of vocal function in pedagogy.
  3 Be able to extend existing personal vocal practice.
  4 Be equipped to apply work learned so far in different environments and performance styles.
  5 Be able to profile accurately a student’s needs and select strategies for meeting them.

Unit Assignments

  1 An analysis of recorded material, spoken or sung, in terms of vocal function and voice quality. The analysis may be prepared as a marked script or commentary on the material.
  2 To teach a prepared topic to a student or client in the course follow-up session under supervision (20 minutes maximum). As part of this exercise you should prepare your own profile check sheet.
  3 To present case histories of three different clients studied over a period of three to ten sessions. The case histories must be presented in written form, though you may use audio or video examples in support of your written analysis. Supervision from Gillyanne Kayes will be available during this unit either by telephone or e-mail.

You will be assessed on your ability to identify goals with your clients and set a suitable programme of work. In addition you will need to:

  2 Demonstrate your ability to make a clear and accurate diagnosis of any vocal difficulties experienced by your client during the observation period.
Show that you can communicate effectively as a teacher or coach.
  3 Demonstrate your ability to model vocal tasks, set-ups and vocal difficulties (as appropriate) during the course of your teaching.

THE FACULTY

Gillyanne Kayes is a freelance writer, teacher and voice expert. She has been training voices for the last 21 years and has numerous clients working in professional theatre and film.

Jeremy Fisher is a performance coach, Musical Director and prize-winning accompanist. As a vocal coach he works with opera sings, actors, singing teachers and song writers on repertoire, style and performance integration.

David Carey is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, David studied Speech and Drama at the RSAMD, gained his MA (with distinction) in Contemporary English Language and Linguistics at Reading University. He is currently Voice Tutor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Dr Meribeth G Dayme is Chief Executive of LifeWise International and works as a Voice and Communication Specialist in business and the Performing Arts.

Julie McLean is a qualified Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) with fifteen years post-graduate experience. She has worked for the last six years in a specialist capacity with voice disordered clients in the NHS and private sector.

Lise Olson is currently a Lecturer in Acting and Voice at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and teaches 'The Voice of Violence' for Vocal Process.

Jenevora Williams is teacher-in- residence for The National Youth Choir, works with the choristers at St Paul's Cathedral, and acts as consultant to Decca, Hyperion and the ROH on child performers.
