Module Two - Unit Ten
Observed Teaching or Clinical Practice
 

Overview
This unit is an extended form of assessment, enabling us to monitor and advise on the quality of your teaching or clinical voice work. You will be asked to teach topics in the seminar group and will be observed working with clients in your own environment. This may include a workshop or rehearsal, or your private studio, by arrangement with Vocal Process. External examiners as well as Vocal Process tutors may act as observers.

Learning Outcomes
On completing this unit you will:

  1 Increased confidence in analysis of vocal problems in spoken and sung voice.
  2 The ability to tailor training programme for client groups and individual needs.
  3 The ability to discuss and articulate vocal training and performance challenges in terms of vocal function.
  4 A deeper understanding of the requirements for healthy and effective voice use within your chosen environment.

Unit Assignments

  1 To present and teach one topic from the Singing and the Actor Training course to the seminar group. You should use visual aids such as diagrams, models or physical gesture to support your presentation as appropriate to your client base.
  2 Teach for up to a full day in your normal work environment.
  3 Discuss and articulate your teaching process with your appraiser during the course of the day.

Unit Assessment
For the Singing and the Actor Training topic you will be required to demonstrate:

  1 A grasp of key concepts underlying the information in Singing and the Actor Training and Advanced Core Training
  2 Clarity of communication
  3 The ability to discuss your topic in terms of vocal function.
  4 Familiarity with information from other sources that may be relevant to your topic from your own reading and research.
During your teaching or clinical practice you will be required to demonstrate:
  5 That you are adequately prepared for your class, session or workshop.
  6 That you can communicate clearly with your client group.
  7 Accuracy of diagnostic skills, your ability to identify vocal tasks and to set appropriate training targets.
  8 Your understanding of stylistic environmental factors and how these affect vocal choices.

THE FACULTY

Gillyanne Kayes is a freelance writer, teacher and voice expert. She has been training voices for the last 21 years and has numerous clients working in professional theatre and film.

Jeremy Fisher is a performance coach, Musical Director and prize-winning accompanist. As a vocal coach he works with opera sings, actors, singing teachers and song writers on repertoire, style and performance integration.

David Carey is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, David studied Speech and Drama at the RSAMD, gained his MA (with distinction) in Contemporary English Language and Linguistics at Reading University. He is currently Voice Tutor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Dr Meribeth G Dayme is Chief Executive of LifeWise International and works as a Voice and Communication Specialist in business and the Performing Arts.

Julie McLean is a qualified Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) with fifteen years post-graduate experience. She has worked for the last six years in a specialist capacity with voice disordered clients in the NHS and private sector.

Lise Olson is currently a Lecturer in Acting and Voice at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and teaches 'The Voice of Violence' for Vocal Process.

Jenevora Williams is teacher-in- residence for The National Youth Choir, works with the choristers at St Paul's Cathedral, and acts as consultant to Decca, Hyperion and the ROH on child performers.
