Module One - Unit 3
Practical Phonetics
with Heather Keens

 

Overview
A one-day course that will give you a working knowledge of phonetics and their importance in singing and speech training. Topics covered will include: an introduction to the sounds of Standard English; practise on using phonetics to accurately transcribe what you hear using the International Phonetic Alphabet; and practical example on how to apply this work in the singing or voice studio.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the unit you will have acquired

  1 An understanding of basic phonetic theory.
  2 Tools to develop clear vowels and precise articulation of consonants.
  3 Background knowledge to support your work on computer voice prints.
  4 Methods to apply phonetics in work environments.
  5 Tools for further study and research.

Unit Assignments

  1 Phonemic transcription of a short piece of text chosen by the course tutor.
  2 Identify the phonetic characteristics of an accent (own choice).
  3 Complete a short test on articulatory anatomy and physiology.
  4 Attendance at two follow-up sessions with the course tutor for those wishing to be certificated at the end of the programme.
  5 Devise a short project demonstrating application of the work learned in a performance or teaching situation. The project may include recorded material (such as of a performance of a song or poem), a phonemic transcription, notes on lesson or rehearsal preparation, notes on performance decisions.

Unit Assessment

  1 You will be assessed on your understanding of basic phonemes via the transcription and accuracy of the accent analysis.
  2 You will be assessed on your ability to reflect on your own understanding of phonetics and their relevance to teaching and performance practice in your work environment.

Other Information
Practical Phonetics is open to the public; follow up sessions with the course tutor are available to Integrated Voice participants only.

Graduates of training programmes that included work on phonetics (for example, Degree in Speech Science, Speech and Language Therapy training, MA Voice Studies CSSD) may be able to receive a credit for this course unit but will still have to complete the assignments.

THE FACULTY

Gillyanne Kayes is a freelance writer, teacher and voice expert. She has been training voices for the last 21 years and has numerous clients working in professional theatre and film.

Jeremy Fisher is a performance coach, Musical Director and prize-winning accompanist. As a vocal coach he works with opera sings, actors, singing teachers and song writers on repertoire, style and performance integration.

David Carey is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, David studied Speech and Drama at the RSAMD, gained his MA (with distinction) in Contemporary English Language and Linguistics at Reading University. He is currently Voice Tutor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Dr Meribeth G Dayme is Chief Executive of LifeWise International and works as a Voice and Communication Specialist in business and the Performing Arts.

Julie McLean is a qualified Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) with fifteen years post-graduate experience. She has worked for the last six years in a specialist capacity with voice disordered clients in the NHS and private sector.

Lise Olson is currently a Lecturer in Acting and Voice at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and teaches 'The Voice of Violence' for Vocal Process.

Jenevora Williams is teacher-in- residence for The National Youth Choir, works with the choristers at St Paul's Cathedral, and acts as consultant to Decca, Hyperion and the ROH on child performers.
