Integrated Voice in more detail...

Module One
Fundamentals of Vocal Integration

This module deals with deconstructing vocal function and develops tools for understanding voice research and its vocabulary. The module will provide further information on anatomy, physiology and basic acoustics. It will enable you to understand voice use in terms of vocal function, how the individual parts of the vocal mechanism move and to target personal skills using work learned in Singing and the Actor Training.

Four tutorials are provided as part of Module One. These provide an opportunity to clarify personal practice and support you through the course work. The tutorials will help you to identify and address gaps in understanding.

Module One Induction: Induction provides an opportunity to raise any fears about coursework and to ask questions about course management. You will be guided through the programme, what is expected of you, how to access resources and maintain contact with tutors during the course. Course director Gillyanne Kayes will introduce members of the faculty. It is an excellent opportunity to meet with other course members.

Module Two
Advanced Vocal Practice

This comprises the learning of diagnostic tools, advancing personal vocal skills and applying the work in teaching practice.

Successful completion of Module Two results in the ‘Certificate of Advanced Vocal Practice’.

Module Two Induction: This will be an opportunity to meet new course members and to discuss the next stage of the programme. The session will be led by Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher who will help you identify positive changes in your voice use, auditory skills and understanding. You will also be encouraged to identify any gaps in understanding. The session will end with a short training video to familiarise you with the larynx in different vocal gestures as a preparation for Advanced Singing and the Actor Training.

Module Two is about putting the information into practice in your chosen environment. You will develop an understanding of how the parts of the voice function as a whole. You will develop tools for effective communication and clarify terminology used in vocal pedagogy. In addition, there will be a session in an endoscopy clinic to deepen your understanding of the anatomy and physiology from Module One.

As in Module One, tutorials will support you in refining your personal practice. There will be additional small-group seminars to discuss and reflect on teaching challenges and to explore the application of the work in different vocal genres and environments.

The work is taught via a number of mandatory units, personal mentoring sessions, small group seminars and long-distance supervision.
