Welcome to eZINE 52

In this edition we share the preliminary data from our singing teacher survey for the Oxford Handbook of Singing, and preview our new CD with a special eZINE offer. Our Singing and the Actor Training Retreat in February is sold out, so we announce a new date in March. There reports on our teachfest in Sweden in October, and finally, we share some Vocal Process Christmas cheer with GoodGifts.

Oxford Handbook of Singing survey

Thank you to all of the singing teachers who answered our survey for the Oxford Handbook of Singing. The responses are charted on the map below - the darker the colour, the more responses that country gave (the UK gave 374 of them). In all there were over 800 responses from six continents. It was actually seven continents, as someone did put Antarctica in their survey answer, but we didn't know how many pupils they would have there...

Map of the world showing respondents to our Oxford Handbook of Singing survey of singing teachers

There were just six questions and most people filled in the survey in just over a minute. The survey really seemed to strike a chord with singing teachers all over the world: we had responses from Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Uruguay, and of course the UK and the US.

We're compiling a short pre-analysis of the results in preparation for the chapter (being published in late 2012) for uploading onto our website, so we'll keep you posted on progress.

The 5 Minute Vocal Warmup CD

This is advance notice of our newest product launch, our first Vocal Warmup CD for your speaking voice, incorporating the Four Core Skills for healthy voice. And there's a very special offer for eZINE readers (see below)

"Practical exercises that address the issues - I have simple things to remember".

Timer showing 5 Minutes - the length of our 5 Minute Vocal WarmupYou may remember that a few months ago we launched the 5 Minute Vocal Warmup ebook. The original idea for a Vocal Warmup ebook came from our work with the Premier Field Engineers at Microsoft Headquarters in the UK, and was designed for warming up your speaking voice before a heavy 'voice' day (presenting, lecturing, telesales)

The Premier Field Engineers have to travel all over Europe and Asia giving demonstrations, talks and workshops on Microsoft products, and often have to speak unmiked across the white noise of rows of computers - they needed our help!

The Microsoft PFEs were thrilled with the techniques and vocal tips we gave them:
"
All in all, one of the best “personal skills” courses that I’ve been on."
The resulting ebook we created for them has been such a success that we've decided to release the same 5 Minute Vocal Warmup as a CD. So now you can warm up your voice on the way to work.

The CD contains the same Four Core Skills we think are essential to maintaining a healthy voice in the workplace. There's an introduction on how to use the CD, and four tracks with detailed instructions on the Four Core Skills. Then track 6 is the complete 5 Minute Vocal Warmup.

And we've included the bonus track - the 10 Second Voice Check. This is the same voice check that Gillyanne and Jeremy do before giving a day's presentation - it tells us if our voices are ready to work, and genuinely takes 10 seconds.

Introduction - how to use the CD
Core Skill 1 - Breathing
Core Skill 2 - Opening Your Throat
Core Skill 3 - Jaw, Tongue and Lips
Core Skill 4 - Head Position, Body and Brain
The 5 Minute Vocal Warmup

Bonus Track - The 10 Second Voice Check

"Overall this has had a positive effect on my presentation skills and reduced the stress on my vocal folds. If my throat hurts I can now do something to address it, so a completely converted thumbs up from meJ"

We're just completing the designs for the CD now, so it will be available from the end of next week.

And there's a very special offer just for eZINE readers - for the next week only, eZINE readers can pre-order the CD for the same price as the ebook. To cover the cost of making and pressing the CD, it will be available for £19.97 including postage in the UK, but eZINE readers can pre-order it for £2 less at £17.97. This link is only available in this eZINE - it isn't even on our website.

Sweden

Gillyanne coaching a singing student in Sweden during our teachfest in OctoberWe had a very successful trip to Sweden in October at three different musical institutions, SMI, Scengymnasiet and Dansforum.

One of our favourite colleges in the world to work at (SMI, the Institute of Music Education in Stockholm) hosted the first three days of our teachfest. We gave a public masterclass, a day of one-to-one coaching and a pedagogy workshop for the college students and guest teachers. We've had great feedback from it and more requests for coaching and skype sessions.

Jeremy coaching from the keyboard in Goteborg during our Sweden teachfest in October"I really enjoyed the workshop we had with you at SMI. I learned a lot and I use what I learned both on myself and my students. As always I wish there was more time! :) I thought you had a very nice and good way to work with everyone, also I love that not everything was dead serious and that you used a lot of humour during the session. You encouraged everyone and got a lot of good results. I hope you're coming back! :) Thanks! Karolina"

The student workshop at Scengymnasiet was a fascinating mix of musical theatre and pop, and we were tweeted and facebooked by Swedish singer/songwriter Billy Qwen

"So grateful that I got the opportunity to learn fr.o.m. these wonderful and amusing people!"

We had to laugh on our train journey from Stockholm to Goteborg. It was supposed to take three hours, but we noticed the train going backwards down a hill at one point - we arrived in Goteborg five hours later to find there had been leaves on the line. We thought that only happened in the UK...

We finished with three days at Dansforum in Goteborg. This is a very busy school right on the waterside, and we worked with 20 students and 10 teachers on musical theatre songs and techniques. Many thanks to Linnea for taking these photographs - it's rare you see Jeremy sitting still, and it's even more rare to see a photograph of Gillyanne with her eyes open!

"The way you started up on saturday with lecture combining both theory and practical exercises were great. You had a very sane (don't know if thats right word to use...) attitude towards the way of teaching singing which I like and try to apply in my way of teaching. You gave also a very confident and friendly atmosphere so that we dared to try out different techniques which can be scary in front of strangers.
So I must say I learned a lot and got good tools to work with! Hope to have the opportunity to work with you again. Thank you! Karin"

And yes, we're planning to come back in 2012.

Singing and the Actor Retreats sold out (again)...

Yes it's true, our Singing and the Actor Training Retreat in February is sold out already. That's now the seventh SATA Training Retreat in a row that has sold out weeks before the event. And the Advanced Training Retreat has only one place left. We have people flying in from Paris, Dubai and even Brazil specifically to work with us on these courses.

The heron last winter in the garden at our Vocal Process Training Retreat venueThe Welsh Borders can be described as: "they're beautiful, but they're cold" (spot the quotation from an opera/musical crossover piece - email Jeremy if you know it). So we're recommending that people bring woollies and thick socks!

The picture you see here is of the river running through our garden last winter with our regular visitor, the heron. He's back again this year with his girlfriend, so we're hoping for a little flock of herons in the spring.

We're already planning another Singing and the Actor Training Retreat in March/April, so if you want to join us for that (March 30th to April 1st), click on this link to book as soon as you can.

And finally...

It's that time of year again. So we're turning to the GoodGifts catalogue for Christmas inspiration.

Give Beaks a Chance - Vocal Process is donating ducks to India via the GoodGifts websiteGoodGifts was created by the Charities Advisory Trust to provide deprived areas of much-needed goods and supplies, encouraging literacy and growth using every penny of your donation.
Vocal Process has been donating to GoodGifts for several years now, and this year we're focussing on the topics that seem suitable for the Christmas Panto season - lots of food, chocolate, some magic beans and one odd method of transportation.

We're donating enough money to GoodGifts to provide a pig (which will herself produce up to 24 piglets a year) and a chicken bank with 5 chickens for families in Africa. We're also funding ducks for families in Orissa (one of India's poorest states), to provide eggs for the women to eat.

There's devastation in the West Indies with world chocolate prices plummeting, so we're making a donation to encourage growers to reinvigorate the local farms with premium cocoa, encouraging cocoa dancing (yes, the pods are crushed by foot) and chocolate development.

Bamboo bicycle piled high - Vocal Process is donating a bamboo bicycle via the GoodGifts website to AfricaIn Rwanda some extraordinary magic beans have been developed that produce 5 times the crop of ordinary beans, allowing families to eat and to sell the surplus.

And finally, we couldn't find a pumpkin but here's the next best thing - a bamboo bicycle. The bamboo is grown in Africa, and made into a bicycle in local workshops. Bamboo is many times stronger than steel, and the bicycles are used by teachers and midwives ( godmothers?) to transport medical and training supplies around Africa.

If you'd like to join us in donating a little something for Christmas, please visit the GoodGifts website - you can help people from all over the world for as little as £5.

Have a great festive season, and we'll see you in the New Year.
