 Gillyanne Kayes Jeremy Fisher

The 2011 Masterteacher Tour

Back in 2003, New Zealander Luisa Shanahan attended our free On The House event at the Salvation Army hall in central London. She reported back to NEWZATS members "To describe these two as a dynamic duo would not be an exaggeration" and that the members "would, I predict, be interested in the team practice offerings of Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher".

Last year Katharine Watts contacted us with the idea of coming to the Antipodes for the 2011 Masterteacher tour, and most of the arrangements for New Zealand were made by August 2010.

This year with ANATS on board and wanting us to visit the South Australia (Adelaide) and New South Wales (Sydney) chapters, our timetable is now pretty full. We've got the house-sitters organised and we're flying out on July 11th. Below you can find out where we are, what we're doing and when. We also give the contact details for the organisers so you can email them directly with any questions.

See you there!

Mousemat with "I passed the Vocal Process Musical Voicenerd Test"Are You A Musical Voicenerd?

For those of you champing at the bit who can't get to Australia or New Zealand, here's a new quiz from Jeremy to keep you going.

If you get all the answers right (and we'll provide them on a separate webpage so you can't cheat) then why not reward yourself with a brand new "I passed the Vocal Process Musical Voicenerd test" mousemat from the Vocal Process Voicenerd Collection?

The following are all lines from Musical Theatre songs, but which ones?
(and if you’re really nerdy you should be able to answer with the song, the show and the character!)

Let’s start with some easy ones (you'd have to be living under a rock if you didn't know...)

I’ve got a beautiful feeling...

He showed off, splashing around

or how about

Turn your face away from the garish light of day

And they turn your dreams to shame

We ain’t met yet but I’m a-willin’ to bet

Making my entrance again with my usual flair

Now Ulla Belt

And some slightly trickier ones:

I’ve given you growlights and mineral supplements, what do you want from me, blood?

Lady Peaceful, Lady Lucky [ps it's not Lady Gaga...]

And the band starts to play as the horses go round

Who could top or make this comic opera more compelling?

A “former” stripper and her snake, Wayne

And finally the really obscure ones:

Again, step kick kick leap kick touch

I like my hair, really it is pleasant to the touch

Let just one person shake my hand?

It’s the land of naked marble boys!

"My Voice is, my Voice does..."

That's the overall title of our Masterteacher tour down under - with the byline: "if it's healthy, appropriate and repeatable, it's fine.”

We don't teach a method, everything we do is geared towards the individual singer and their needs. That includes where they perform, what they perform, how they learn best and, of course, the physiology of vocal function.

As the needs of the two countries are slightly different, we have (at the request of the organisers) devised two separate programme. Let's start with:

ANATS Adelaide (SA) and Sydney (NSW) programmes:

What's the task/Finding your best voice:
An approach for Teachers and Performers

Day 1:  The brochure for the ANATS Adelaide chapter part of the Masterteacher tour with Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher of Vocal Process
The day begins with an opening question - What does a singer have to do? We go into the multiple tasks that a singer has to deal with, then over the next two days we break some of those tasks down for the benefit of the singers we're working with, and the participants of the conference.

We'll be focusing on how we train singers for different musical styles, with interactive lectures, singer demonstrations and our favourite, the Q&A.

We're also giving a masterclass and coaching sessions on Successful Singing Auditions, based on some of the information in our second book (and Jeremy's 8000+ auditions in the West End). The performance decisions for each song can be changed to match different audition needs (for which character, which show and which genre you are auditioning).

Day 2:The ANATS Sydney chapter brochure for the Masterteacher tour with Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher
Day 2 begins with an interactive section on putting technique into performance. Which techniques suit which songs/singers/situations? And how do you identify what's appropriate for the performance?

The next part of the day is on the techniques and tools we use to help the singer find their best - their best voice, their best sound, their best performance (for that particular day). It's interactive, it's a masterclass, and we're open to questions!

And the NEWZATS Wellington programme:

My Voice is... my Voice does...
Multi-genre vocal skills for teachers and performers

Day 1:The Masterteachers tour brochure for the New Zealand Association of Teachers of Singing conference 2011 featuring Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher
Day one begins with the question Does One Size Fit All? Is there a single technique or set of techniques that will work for every musical genre or style of singing?

We move on to a Hear-Feel-Do session, where we lead the participants through a number of different vocal and musical style elements.

Then we'll be focusing on working with the child and adolescent voice - The Singer In Every Child. And we'll be showing some of the work we've included in the new Singing Express series for schools, including the great new songs we commissioned for books 3 and 4 in many different musical genres (musical theatre, pop, 'Disney', jazz, world, rock, folk etc etc)

Day 2:
Day 2 will begin with an interactive session and masterclass on vocal range and registers. This is a subject very close to Gillyanne's heart as it was curiosity about how singers working in 'non-classical' styles deal with register transitions that set her off on her doctoral research.

We'll move on to a session called Mean What You Sing, which includes the difference between diction and intelligibility. And we end the day with a masterclass on Singing the Text.

Day 3:
Day 3 begins with a fun session on My Favourite Things, the tools and techniques we each use the most. If you want to experience Front Foot/Back Foot, Answers On A Postcard or moaning, this is the one for you.

Then on to a multi-genre song-mapping masterclass - how to deal with the different requirements of classical, musical theatre or pop songs (amongst others). And how to sing the same song for different job auditions...

And finally we finish with a practical session using elements from our incredibly popular Belting Explained course - prepare to unleash your inner vocal beast!

You can download the NEWZATS brochure here - the NEWZATS conference has a substantial Earlybird discount if you book by June 1st.

The Voicenerd Collection of clothing and singing related items from Vocal Process, as featured in the Singer magazineAnd finally...

Thanks to the Singer magazine for the excellent half-page spread on the Voicenerd Collection. As it happens, the "Does My Voice Look Big In This" t-shirt is one of my favourites too!

Remember you can get your own t-shirt or mousemat / iphone cover / set of mugs / sticker / messenger bag / water bottle or, as I know several people have already done, give them as birthday presents. New designs are being added all the time, so check out the Voicenerd Collection here.
