Welcome to Vocal Process eZINE 11. We are delighted to be renewing contact with you after several months, and this edition is packed with news about the latest VP happenings.

INSET and Tailored Courses

So far 2005 has been the year of INSET and in-house for Vocal Process. In addition to our continuing public course programme, Vocal Process has been invited to a number of educational establishments to give personalised training to voice professionals.

Two INSETS were led by Gillyanne for Somerset Music Services (a full day) and the Berkshire Youth Music Trust (a half day) respectively. Gillyanne will be returning to BYMT in October to do a full day INSET. Look out for her in Bristol in early October, when she will be doing an INSET for a group of public schools in the area, organised by Colston School. Read more about the Somerset Music Services experience with Gillyanne.

Jeremy and Gillyanne gave a Musical Theatre training day at Loughborough College with first and second year BTEC students being put through their paces in preparation for end of year assessments.

The South West Voice SLT SIG invited Vocal Process to present a training day for them in April. The tailored day included the application and comparison of the four basic vocal sets, with video endoscopy and stroboscopy examples, and a demonstration of Computer Voice Analysis using two different spectrographic programmes.

Gillyanne returned to Central School of Speech and Drama in May to give two days of workshops on vocal set-up and diagnostic in voice training. It was a fascinating two days, with the students contributing much from their own varied vocal experience, including Mongolian overtone chanting and various forms of interesting vocal distortion ('dist' tones).

Over the last academic year, Gillyanne Kayes has made regular teaching trips to Motherwell College, a venture that culminated in a full day of Successful Singing Auditions with Jeremy Fisher. Read more about this tailored course.

A trip to Tel Aviv

Vocal Process has been sponsored once again by the British Council to teach in Israel. Gillyanne and Jeremy have just returned from a round of workshops in Tel Aviv, set up by the Stage Center organisation.

The workshops began with a 'Find your Voice' day for amateur singers of all persuasions and focused on body, breath, voice and personal confidence. A three-day course followed on 'Performance in Musical Theatre'. This course was attended by experienced professionals - actors, singers and dancers as well as teachers of singing. Both courses were packed, with participants hungry for information and techniques. The trip ended with a lecture presentation by Gillyanne and Jeremy at the Givatayim Theatre for representatives of the British Council, the European Union, and an audience of 300. Click here for Jeremy's full report on the trip.

Advanced Core Training

Vocal Process Advanced Core Training took place at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford last month. This course is not for the faint-hearted and requires participants to work and think 'out of the box'. The two days included accessing mixed voice qualities, moving between qualities, exploration of vowel and consonant issues and identifying vocal set-ups in commercial recordings.

Our thanks once more to Gill Main, pictured here, for her expert assistance in the small group sessions.

Upcoming courses

A new course, 'Teaching in the Studio', is a two-day programme on the development of diagnostic ability and the use of auditory, visual and language skills for clarity of communication. This course is the result of an exciting collaboration between Vocal Process and Elizabeth Stirling, an NLP™ Master Practitioner. For those of you new to Neuro Linguistic Programming, our own approach is derived from some of its precepts: in particular the use of language in teaching and the promotion of excellence. On the first day, Gillyanne and Jeremy will be working on building a voice profile for client assessment, goal setting appropriate to your client or client group, and identifying the causes of vocal difficulties and style problems. The second day will be devoted to Elizabeth's expertise in NLP™ precepts including eye movements, the different language modalities used for communication, the circle of excellence and the "feedback sandwich". Elizabeth is an accomplished singer herself and we are delighted to welcome her to Vocal Process. This course will be run by invitation only, so email us if you would like to be considered for a place. Click here for more details about 'Teaching in the Studio'.

Belting Explained comes up again on October 1st. If you have missed out on this course in previous years, book early as it is always popular
(see course details)

Computer Voice Training October 15th, 2005. The last course was so full that we have had to do a re-run this autumn. Due to the intensive nature of this course and the equipment involved, space is limited so let us know right away if you want to join this course. (see course details)

Vocal Process Core Training will run again in London on October 28th-30th. Numerous performers, teachers and vocal coaches have benefited from this course and we urge you to put the date in your diaries if you want to discover more about the how and why of voice. (see course details)

Advance Notice

As part of Module Two Certification we will be setting up an 'endoscopy half-day' with Tom and Sara Harris. As in Studio Voice Work we are offering few additional places on this course by invitation. Please email us if you would like to be considered for inclusion. Date and venue will be confirmed shortly.

Future Appearances

Gillyanne will be appearing at the Angela Jackson's Vocal Workshops on Sunday October 9th to give a day on Belting techniques. Sponsored by the Arts Council England, the Musicians Union and the local Eastleigh Borough Council, the organisation offers a valuable service to the community with a varied workshop portfolio ranging from 'Vocal Harmonies' with Jacqueline Dankworth and friends to David Jones and Ann de Renais. Angela Jackson's mission is to provide the community with "affordable high-quality vocal workshops and concerts using the very best teachers and performers, and to encourage all forms of live music" and Gillyanne is delighted to be involved. Check out the site and forthcoming workshops on http://www.angelajacksonsworkshops.co.uk/workshops.htm

VASTA (Voice and Speech Trainers Association) is holding its annual conference in Glasgow at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in August. Vocal Process has been invited to join the International Voice Organisations Round Table, and Gillyanne will be at the conference to represent us.

The panel is set to include representatives of the British Voice Association, the Voice Care network, Giving Voice, the International Centre for Voice, and the RSC voice staff.

And both Gillyanne and Jeremy will be appearing at PEVoC 6, the Pan European Voice Conference, in London in September. Gillyanne is giving a workshop entitled Perspective on Passaggio for Contemporary Singers, and Jeremy is appearing as the opera accompanist at the PEVoC 6 party. Jeremy will also be acting as conference accompanist for the many workshops taking place over the four days. The PEVoC experience is highly recommended for all those seriously interested in voice. There is a broad range of papers, workshops and discussion - a fantastic learning opportunity for vocal practitioners of all kinds. See  http://www.pevoc6.com

Vocal Process author activities

In addition to their work for A&C Black Pubs, Gillyanne and Jeremy both write educational articles for magazines and selected websites. Recent articles have appeared in the Music Teacher and Classroom Music, and a new vocal music review is due in the Music Teacher next month. In addition, Jeremy has just celebrated his 300th article for 'Operatalent', the opera information website. Each article identifies an aria, duet or ensemble and describes its function in the opera, the technical difficulties, and "the story so far". Click on this link and visit the Operas section for more information.

The new Vocal Process website

Our new site reflects the growth of Vocal Process and its work over the past year. It is easy to navigate, written in clear English and has several new sections - expect further development over the coming months. One section of the site is now devoted to the ‘Singing and the Actor Experience’, a resource for performers and teachers wanting to learn more about the application of Gillyanne Kayes’ work.

Jeremy Fisher has written a new article for this section giving tips on mirening, and has recorded the first few (mirened) lines of "If the heart of a man".

Your Questions Answered

Our current 'Your Questions Answered' section is being expanded, and we are interested in your problems. Our panel of experts, in addition to Jeremy and Gillyanne, includes Dr Meribeth Dayme, distinguished writer, expert in vocal physiology, and coach in creating confidence; Mr Moshe Harrell, the Israeli laryngologist and medical advisor for our latest endoscopy session; and Dr Nicholas Bannan, co-creator of the MTPP course at Reading University Department of Education, whose interests include group vocal interaction, aural development and the human capacity for vocal learning. All our experts have the knack of conveying complex information in a straightforward, user-friendly manner, so if you have anything that confuses you about singing, vocal technique, vocal function, physiology or performance issues, please email your question to YQA@vocalprocess.co.uk.

The Singing and the Actor Audio Guide

The mirening recording mentioned earlier came from our two-day stint in the recording studio laying down the tracks for the new Singing and the Actor Audio Guide. The SATA Audio Guide is a CD with 38 tracks of examples in male and female voice, and a 16-page booklet with commentary and useful tips from the author. The booklet also contains page references for the exercises in both editions of Gillyanne's book Singing and the Actor.

The Audio Guide is Gillyanne's creation for those who need to hear vocal examples before truly understanding the concepts. The 'Singing and the Actor Audio Guide' is the only CD linked directly to Gillyanne's book, and is currently only available from the Vocal Process website. The CD is now in stock, and normally retails for £12.99. But for the next month we are offering a special price of £11.49 to readers of this eZINE. This offer is not even available on the website, so email us directly on SATA@vocalprocess.co.uk quoting eZINE11 and we will personally send you an invoice for the special price.

The next eZINE

We are delighted to announce that our next edition, eZINE 12, will include an article from Dr Meribeth Dayme. If you have enjoyed this eZINE and would like to read previous Vocal Process editions, click on this link for access to the archive from July 2003.

In the meanwhile, remember to monitor your effort levels.
