Comparison of Speech, Breathy Speech
and Falsetto
Jeremy Fisher
Demonstrating difference
between a breathy Speech quality with horizontal folds and a breathy
falsetto with folds raised at the back. Starting with the “neutral”
reading of Speech quality, note the presence of strong harmonics all
the way up the page. In the second sample, there is more air
turbulence showing (the grey lines become fainter and more
disturbed), but there are still readings from the bottom to the top
of the screen. In the third sample, the emphasis has shifted to the
bottom of the page, with mostly air turbulence showing in the top
two thirds and a large white area in the middle. On the sound file
you can clearly hear the difference between breathy speech and
falsetto. In the falsetto it actually sounds as if there is a chunk
of harmonics missing at the lower end of the spectrum, the sound is
clearer but 'hootier'.

Giving the student broader knowledge about the structures of the
larynx can be effective on many levels of their training and
understanding. The 'moveable larynx' has long been the starting
point of Vocal Process courses including Singing and the Actor Training.
