Vocal Process Reports...
Report on our 'On
The House' event
Luisa Shannahan,
vocal trailblazer from New Zealand, read of our On The House event
in September and came along. This is the article she wrote for the
New Zealand Association of Teachers of Singing:
The
promotional material for Vocal Process Limited describes it
as a company owned and run by authors and voice experts Gillyanne
Kayes and Jeremy Fisher,
dedicated to sharing information and promoting expertise in
the field of voice and performance. I was aware of Gillyannes
Estill informed teaching work with West End performers, having
introduced her text, Singing and The Actor (2000, London.
A&C Black Publishers Ltd) to second and third year NASDA
students this year. Jeremy's expertise is as a musical director,
vocal coach and pianist being credited with over 8,000 West
End auditions.
To describe these
two as a dynamic duo would not be an exaggeration. They are
undoubtedly on a mission. I joined around 300 registrants for their
September On The House – Let us hear your voice, interactive day and
taster workshop at the Regent Hall in Oxford Street. The topics to
tempt were Successful Singing Auditions, Singing and the Actor,
Changing Voices with the ebullient Scottish teacher, Deirdre
Trundle, demonstrating five stages of change in the adolescent
voice, The Voice of Violence with actors coach Lise Olsen, a slick
demonstration of live computer voice analysis by Jeremy Fisher and,
finally, the announcement of a new accreditation one year course in
the pipeline on integrated training for singing and speaking voice.
At their sales desk was the new book co-authored by Gillyanne and
Jeremy, Successful Singing Auditions (2002, London. A&C Black
Publishers Ltd). This useful and practical book has an intriguing
section on the process of FOAL or Falling-Off-A-Log. It seems that
FOAL is to the music theatre performer what FACH is to the opera
singer, narrowing down your repertoire to works that suit you, your
voice, your personality and your casting. (p37)
That Vocal Process
Limited employ best arts business practices is impressive and
everywhere evident – organization, promotions, course choices and
discounts, glossy newsletter, quick client response and follow-up,
website information. NEWZATS members who had
their aural and stylistic horizons broadened by our Australian
colleague, phenomenon and ANATS 2002 MasterTeacher, Irene Bartlett,
would, I predict, be interested in the team practice offerings of
Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher.
