Opera Now - "A unique approach to voice"

The multidisciplinary voice training company Vocal Process has developed a unique approach to voice over the last five years, with a Consultancy led by authors Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher.

Vocal pedagogue Gillyanne Kayes gives precise technical input to singers experiencing vocal difficulties, and advises on integrating healthy spoken and sung voice. "An essential part of maintaining vocal health for singers lies in use of the speaking voice. Classical singers in particular need to understand how to release the singing muscles and engage the muscles for supported speech. Identifying the placement of your speaking voice informs your singing habits and improves vocal stamina. I have found that singers who master this tend to experience less vocal fatigue."

Performance coach and accompanist Jeremy Fisher's work on integration for opera singers has already been featured in The Singer magazine. "Singers today need to be able to express themselves through text and story as well as through beauty of tone. A sustainable career depends on making informed choices." An expert in audition techniques, his studio also includes a voice analysis programme for accurate and objective feedback on resonance, placement and vowel production. "It made me refine my knowledge of what exactly was happening physically when producing various sounds. It is particularly good for monitoring excess breath, vibrato, onsets, and vowel articulation." (Penelope Mackay, tutor at GSMD and RAM).

Plans for Vocal Process in 2003 include courses and consultations in London, Stockholm and Tel Aviv.
