Monthly Summary
The Vocal Process
Core Training course in July is almost full, with a healthy mix of
teachers and performers in voice, movement and singing from as afar
afield as the USA and Saudi Arabia. The Benslow Music Trust is
providing the venue, a Victorian manor house with excellent
conference facilities and a new accommodation wing. See our Core
Training page for more details and photographs of the venue.

It has been an
international month, with training events for Vocal Process in Spain
and Sweden. Gillyanne spent several days in Barcelona this month, at
the request of the LEscola Superior de Musica de Catalunya. This
innovative centre, set up in 2000, encourages cross-genre performing
and the sharing of new ideas in the fields of teaching, research and
communication. The three days of training addressed vocal
fundamentals and problems, how to identify and change vocal quality,
and culminated in a Musical Theatre masterclass. Participants
included actors and singers of jazz, contemporary, pop, classical
and traditional Catalan music, and it was fascinating to work with
performers from such varied backgrounds.

At the end of May
Gillyanne and Jeremy visited Sweden to work with the staff and
students of the Kungliga Musikhgskolan (Royal College of Music) in
Stockholm. A lecture/demonstration on the first day focussed on
changing musical style, defining and altering voice qualities, and
finding the drama in the text. The masterclass on the second day had
students accessing new sound qualities and integrating performances
ranging from Phantom of the Opera to Little Shop of Horrors via
Gershwin and Jekyll & Hyde. The third day of private coaching had
many of the staff members working on pieces ranging from Glitter and
Be Gay to Bessie Smith, with some cow-calling along the way.
Everyone was open to the new experiences, and the standard of
musicality at the College is very high. Stockholm is a truly
beautiful city, and we are looking forward to returning there.
