Integrated Voice - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question: Can I sign up for one module to start with as I am not completely sure about the course?

Answer: Absolutely. The Modules are sequential, but it is not necessary to sign for or complete all three Modules – you can stop at the end of each Module if you wish.

Question: I am not very good at writing essays - will I get help with the written work?

Answer: Yes. The Vocal Process directors and the individual tutors will give help and advice on essays and assignments for each unit of the Modules. The essays are designed to demonstrate you understanding of the topics and your ability to express that understanding in written form.

Question: I am a performer – am I suitable for this programme?

Answer: Absolutely. Although the information is geared towards those who wish to pass on the techniques, we have found that performers benefit greatly from understanding their own technical methods. As a performer you might also be interested in our programme of day and weekend courses. Visit the forthcoming courses page of our website for more information.

Question: How much work will I do on speech and song material on the programme?

Answer: Our teaching has a practical bias, and many of the units contain specific times for application of the work on songs and speeches. You can also use your personal mentoring sessions for guidance on assignments that might include songs or speeches and their technical difficulties.

Question: Are the courses always at weekends?

Answer: Yes, with one or two exceptions. Mentoring sessions can be arranged to suit the individual.

Question: Do I need to set aside time for background reading?

Answer: Yes, although it is not a fixed amount. You will see that some units such as Vocal Anatomy require pre-course reading. You will also find that further reading is needed in researching and completing some assignments.

Question: How do I enrol?

Answer: Once you have done Singing and the Actor Training, you can send us an email or letter requesting an interview.

Question: Can I pay by direct debit over some time?

Answer: Currently we do not have a credit agreement available. You can however pay the full amount using your credit card.

Question: Are there any funding options?

Answer: Currently there are no funding options provided by Vocal Process Ltd. However we have had course participants funded by other organisations and institutions. Contact us for details.

Question: Is there a course schedule?

Answer: Yes. Most of the public course units are listed on our website on the forthcoming courses page. Dates of follow-up sessions (usually a half-day) will be published one month in advance of the start of the module and you will need to make yourself available for all of these. One-to-one mentoring sessions are arranged individually after induction.

Question: Where are the courses held? Can I visit the premises?

Answer: Most of our courses take place on various sites around London, which are hired specifically for each event. Many of the tutorials take place at our studios in South East London. Visit our venues page on the website for more information.

Question: What are the follow-ups and where are they held?
Course follow-up sessions enable us to check your understanding and progress. They will include a mixture of small group discussion and practical application. Follow-up sessions generally take place in London at the Vocal Process Studios.

Question: How long are follow ups – when are they? Are they one-to-ones?

Answer: Follow-up sessions are either a half- or full- day and are timetabled within a month of completing the individual unit course. Follow-ups include all participants of the Module, unless otherwise stated. Specific timetabling is arranged between the participants and the relevant course tutor.

Question: How many other people will be following the programme?

Answer: There is a limit of 12 participants at any one time. Certain courses are open to the public, but all follow-up sessions are exclusive to those enrolled on the programme. Mentoring is given in one-to-one sessions.

Question: Will speech and language therapists be in the same group as vocal teachers?

Answer: Yes. Vocal Process has always believed in the value of a multi-disciplinary approach. We find that professionals in different branches of voice are happy to share valuable information and experience with each other.

Question: Computer Voice Training: will I be able to use the knowledge in my teaching?

Answer: Yes. Previous course participants have reported that it not only improved their own personal practice, but that they have been able to use computer software to help some of their own students.

Question: Will phonetics help me to teach articulation problems?

Answer: Yes, absolutely.

Question: How long does it take to complete the course?

Answer: Each Module has a different approximate timetable, and the programme is structured to fit into an existing professional life. Module One events will be scheduled over a period of six months and Module Two events over nine months. You may have up to twelve months to complete Module Three.

Question: What if I can’t make one course – will I have to wait to continue?

Answer: It is not possible to graduate from each Module unless all courses and assignments have been completed. While mentoring sessions can be rearranged, the seminars and follow-up sessions are not movable. If you miss a seminar or its follow-up session, you may have to wait until the following Module run to complete the requirements.

Question: Do I have to buy books – how much should I spend?

Answer: You can discuss this issue with the Vocal Process tutors. Vocal Process Ltd has a small number of books from its own library available to lend to Integrated Voice™ participants. We also recommend Amazon.co.uk for purchasing books on our Recommended Reading lists.

Question: Once I have completed Module One, will I automatically be accepted for Modules Two and Three?

Answer: Not necessarily, although you will certainly be eligible to apply. Vocal Process will advise you on the best route for further study following completion of Module One.

Question: Will I be a certified Vocal Process teacher when I complete the programme?

Answer: When you have completed each Module you will receive certificates from Vocal Process and may identify yourself as Vocal Process accredited, Level 1, 2 or 3. The Integrated Voice™ training programme will train you in teaching methods and information used by Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher in their consultations, lectures and workshops.

Question: How much will I be able to charge students when I have completed the course successfully?

Answer: It is impossible to give specific figures, however the more knowledgeable and skilled the teacher is, the higher the price they can command within their particular market.
