'MIRRORING THE VOICE - 150 years of voice care'
Gillyanne Kayes
presents a workshop entitled Perspective on Passaggio for
Contemporary Singers on Friday September 2nd at 16.50pm for the 6th
Pan European Voice Conference at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
"During 25 years of
work as a vocal trainer I have become fascinated by the concept of
passaggio - the transition point between the vocal registers. In
this workshop I will be concentrating on what has become known as
the primary passaggio of the voice, which usually occurs between D
and G above middle C in both men and women. There are many
interesting solutions to the problem of the passaggio, depending on
the stylistic needs of the genre and the desired outcome of the
singer. The aim of the PEVoC 6 workshop is to throw light on some of
these solutions."
Dr. Donna Soto-Morettini,
course leader of the MA Musical Theatre Perf. course at RSAMD also
presents her work at PEVoC 6 in a workshop entitled Popular Singing:
Elements of Style on September 1st at 14.50pm. Donna has led
workshops for singers for Vocal Process under the title 'Hearing
Voices'.

"What we've all been waiting for… colourful and imaginative"
The Music Teacher magazine on the new Recorder Magic piano
accompaniments book with contributions from Jeremy Fisher.
Late last year
Jeremy Fisher set about creating piano accompaniments for volume
four of the excellent and highly successful Recorder Magic series.
The accompaniments were to recreate and uphold a complex (and
accomplished) multi-instrumental CD already on sale. This unusual
job required a mix of transcription, composition and much thinking
out of the box (how do you recreate unpitched electronic percussion
instruments on a piano?). The enormously wide variety of musical
styles included Medieval, Romantic, English folksong, Rap, Funk and
Techno. The resulting accompaniments (all 30 of them) form part of
the Recorder Magic Piano Accompaniments (for descant books 1-4).

Spring 05
"Songs can contain a number of different influences including
rap, fusion and rock, as well as classical." Jeremy Fisher and Gillyanne Kayes on the development of Musical Theatre
Classroom Music is a
bi-monthly magazine from the Rhinegold stable. In this edition
Musical Theatre experts Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher write on
Musical Theatre for the GCSE exam syllabus. Topics covered include
Historical Roots and Influences, Subject matter, The Function of
Song, Music and Text, Musical Style, Multi-character Songs and Vocal
Styles. Exercises and classroom topics for the composition,
performance and understanding of the Musical Theatre genres are
discussed throughout. Resources are listed both in the article and
on the accompanying Rhinegold website.

"Singing in the shower is highly recommended".
Jeremy Fisher contributes to an article in The Singer magazine
on how singers find spaces for rehearsal
A new article in the
Singer magazine by Emma Whale focuses this month on the problems of
finding good places to rehearse. Together with contemporary
repertoire soloist Sarah Leonard, tenor Scott Wellstead and mezzo
Sarah Walker, Jeremy gives advice on the where, how and why of
rehearsing. And why does Jeremy recommend singing in the shower?
Remember singing is "a joyful occupation - it produces endorphins,
after all - and we all need a flattering acoustic occasionally."

March 05
"A gentle comic dig at poor trusting souls who believe everything
they are told". Jeremy Fisher reviews the new ABRSM vocal
syllabus.
This month's edition
sees performance coach Jeremy Fisher discussing some of the songs in
the new ABRSM vocal syllabus Grade 5. Detailed teachers' notes are
provided for 30 songs, 10 from each list, from Boyce through Brahms
to Weill and Gershwin. And who wrote the gentle comic dig? Mozart,
in Die betrogene Welt.

February 05
"I rejoiced when this course came into being, and it has
certainly fulfilled my expectations!" Integrated Voice Module One begins again this month.
Following last
year's successful run of Integrated Voice Module One, Vocal Process
opened its doors to a number of participants for the re-run of the
Module. Pamela Hall, one of last year's graduates and the originator
of the above quote, has already been passing on some of the
information to her students: "My first years (17yr olds) loved
building larynxes, while my second years have been fascinated by
phonetics". The Module runs from February to July.

January 05
"The rules for choosing repertoire have changed"
Jeremy Fisher reviews the new Trinity College London 2005 vocal
syllabus.
Jeremy Fisher's
latest review in the Music Teacher magazine focuses on the new
Trinity College London 2005 vocal syllabus. Detailed teachers' notes
on 20 songs and recommendations for 20 more are included in the
review. The repertoire choice has extended to a vast 230 songs in
Grade 8 alone, so advice is given on programme building for 10
different voice/personality combinations.

September 04
"A tantalising and frustrating mixed bag"
Jeremy Fisher reviews the new Rockschool vocal syllabus.
Rhinegold Publishing
approached Jeremy Fisher to give a review of the new Rockschool
vocal syllabus, for publication in the September issue of the 'Music
Teacher'. In the
3-page article, Jeremy examines the pieces and exercises in Grades
One and Two for both male and female voices. Teachers' notes for 24
songs are provided, together with hints and tips for the vocal
exercises.
